Internationally known artist Derek Hess has crossed genres of the art world, music, fashion and in my opinion, religion.  Although Derek Hess' Q&A on www.derekhess.com very simply states the answer to the question, "Are you a Christian?" as "No," specific pieces within his art collection may conjure up a certain religious, spiritually  emotional reaction.  As an example, Derek's piece pictured to the right really caused me to think... Initially, I was attracted to the exquisite nature of the piece as a whole, the contrast in colors, and the sketch/comic book style portrayal of  what appears to be an angelic being.  Questions I asked myself: "Is this an angel?  If so, which one and/or which kind?," "Is this being ascending or descending?," "Why are some of the feathers from the wings falling off?," "Does the blue color of the background represent the sky and the orange color represent fire?," "Why does the being appear to be wearing a mask?," "What is the significance of the random words/writings?"  These questions can go on and on as they often do when presented with an artistic representation such as this.  In my opinion, Derek's art can be graphic, specific, thought provoking, shocking, and emotional. You may not agree with everything you see and some pieces may appear to be dark, violent, and/or disparing.  However, try to look beyond the first impression and into the profound implications each piece brings.  As you ponder each piece, attempt to appreciate the artistic vision of Derek Hess.
